Rwanda’s volcanoes national park is strategically placed in the Virunga mountain region comprising of a number of volcanic mountains, which are part of the great Virunga massif region. Volcanoes national park has 2 mountains, which are found with the volcanoes national park gorilla region and hiking head trails can be accessed from Volcanoes national park in Kinigi. The two volcanic peaks that can be hiked from volcanoes in Rwanda include, the Bisoke / Visoke Mountain (3,711 Meters) and Karisimbi volcano (4,507 Meters) both quite close to the ancient Karisoke research center which was setup by Dian Fossey in her bid to protect mountain gorilla population in the Virunga conservation region. Other hikes within the park include, Dian Fossey Grave hike, Ngezi lake trail, twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Mountains hiking in Volcanoes national park is quite rewarding and an alternative activity if you cannot afford a gorilla safari or an add to your Rwanda visit.
Mount Karisimbi Hiking
Hiking mountain Karisimbi can be a two-day hike to the summit – a white shell. Hiking mountain Karisimbi is strenuous hence breaking the journey into two days. Situated within Volcanoes national park, hikers may come across gorillas, birds, monkeys and quite a number of other primates. The hike starts off early morning with a briefing at the Kinigi park head offices and drive to the Karisimbi head trail where the hike begins. You can pick a porter to carry your language and escorted by your guide and a soldier for your security.
Hiking Fee – $175 inclusive overnight camping
Porter Fee – $20 Per day
Mount Bisoke Hike
The Visoke hike is a 1-day hike, this hike is not strenuous but still requires good physical form. The hike takes about 5-6 hours to the summit crater and back down. Hike begins with briefing at the Kinigi park head offices and drive to the head trails where the hike starts off from with a porter, your guide and a soldier who escorts the group.
